Graphic interface and ergonomics

The software's ergonomics have been designed with a view to offering all the software's functionalities, and enabling users to work on several contents in parallel.
As a result, the interface is both dynamic and robust.

Ametys ODF is divided into three main areas:

The ribbon

This is the command tool area, which is particularly dynamic.
It's made up of tabs and buttons, and updates automatically according to which tools are open.

A set of ribbon tabsA ribbon button zone

The default ribbon in the demo version has four static tabs (depending on rights):

  • Home, containing all general tools (resource manager, site map, etc.) ;
  • Users, groups and rights, for authorized persons, containing tools for managing users and assigning rights (TODO) ;
  • Developer, for authorized persons, containing certain debugging tools (TODO) ;
  • Training offer, including all the specific tools needed to manage a training catalog;

These tabs are purple, while the selected one is light grey:

Ribbon buttons can be temporarily hidden by double-clicking anywhere in the tab area (purple band). This saves space for users with small screens:

Context-sensitive tabs

The Ribbon features a context-sensitive tab mechanism. These are dynamic tabs which appear/disappear depending on the context (selected object, open tools, etc.).
Contextual tabs generally belong to a group which may include several such tabs. For ergonomic reasons, groups and tabs have different colors, but these have no particular meaning.

Examples

Opening the Resource Explorer opens a contextual tab named Resources in a group of the same name:

Selecting a course opens a Content group and selects the Course tab:

Creating a table in content editing mode opens a Table Tools group and selects the Table tab. Note that the Edit tab group is also available, allowing the user to return to the content editing menu without leaving the current work on the table:

The side zone

This area lets you manipulate a number of predefined tools, such as :

  • Site map
  • Resource Explorer
  • Content history

When you make changes in the application, it's possible that one of your tools in the central or side zone is no longer up to date. In such a case, you will be notified by the appearance of an explanatory yellow banner at the top of the tool to be updated:

Example: the Properties tool is out of date

The width of the side zone can be adjusted with the mouse. Once your cursor is positioned between the side zone and the main zone, hold down the left mouse button and move the cursor to change the width of the zone as you wish:

Your cursor should be positioned in the purple zone.

The cursor icon will then take the following form to alert you to the possibility of modifying the width of the side zone:

Side zone tabs

This area displays tools only, so all tabs in this area are gray:

The central zone

This is the main work area. It's generally used for editing content and setting page parameters, but it's also here that most of the tools you'll be using are launched.

This zone displays three types of components:

  • Tools such as search, help, etc.
  • The pages
  • The contents

Each of these component types is represented by tabs of different colors:

  • gray for tools
  • yellow for pages
  • red for content

The current tab (the one currently selected) is highlighted in blue.

The search tool is selected
New Article content is selected

Tab display policy in main area

In your preferences, you can select the method of managing the tabs in the main area:

  • One tab per color:
    Only one tab of each color will be opened: a gray tab for tools, a yellow tab for pages, a red tab for content. Use this to keep the number of open tabs to a minimum.

  • One tab per tool:
    Each tool will open in a different tab, but only a yellow tab for pages and a red tab for content.

  • Multiple tabs per tool if required:
    Opens as many tabs as required, so you can have multiple pages and content open at the same time. This is the default option.

To open your preferences, click on the Ametys button at the top left of the interface to select My Preferences:
